Penn State Sports Medicine, part of Penn State Health, has been providing orthopaedics, sports medicine, physiatry and physical therapy services to the State College community and Penn State varsity athletes since 1992.
Program Overview
The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship (State College, Pa.), accredited by the ACGME, began in 2008. Medical services are provided in a convenient and modern facility adjacent to Penn State's main University Park campus. Fellows have the opportunity to participate directly in the surgical and non-surgical care of a variety of teams and groups of patients:

Men's and women's rugby teams
State College Spikes Minor League Baseball team
Professional and recreational athletes
Secondary Education Programs
Fellows further their teaching skills by lecturing and precepting medical students and family medicine residents.
The orthopaedic sports medicine fellow will gain operating room and clinical experience in arthroscopic and open procedures:

Although education is the primary goal of the fellowship program, excellence and compassion in the care of patients are equally important objectives. Scientific knowledge, combined with the ability to listen to patients and colleagues and communicate with them effectively, enables fellows to maximize their experience. The program offers support and guidance as fellows work to reach their highest potential and render excellence in patient care.

The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program uses the San Francisco Matching Services system for applicant selection.
Applications are reviewed beginning in October. Interviews are by invitation only and are typically scheduled in January.

The award, given monthly by the Office for a Respectful Learning Environment, accepts nominations from College of Medicine students who are invited to submit narratives about faculty members, residents, fellows, nurses or any other educators who challenge them and provide an exceptional learning experience. The annual Resident/Fellow Research Day is held each year (with exception of during the COVID-19 pandemic) on and around the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center campus.
The intent of the event is to provide an opportunity for residents and fellows to showcase their research accomplishments to their peers in other clinical departments, as well as their colleagues in the basic sciences.
