Roland Newman, DO
Assistant Professor and Residency Associate Program Director, Family and Community Medicine
Biography
I completed my medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by residency training in Family Medicine at St. Joseph’s Medical Center (now known as Penn State Health St. Joseph’s) in Reading, Pa. My journey in medicine has been shaped by a strong foundation in comprehensive, community-based care and a respectful appreciation for the full spectrum of family medicine.
Clinically, I provide full-scope outpatient family medicine care, including preventive health, chronic disease management, and acute care for patients of all ages. Within the residency program, I serve as Associate Program Director, where I am actively involved in day-to-day operations of the program as well as curriculum development and sustenance, resident advising /mentoring, and teaching in both clinical and didactic settings.
As a clinician-educator, I’m especially interested in health systems impact on clinicians, medical education of students and residents, and the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to medical education and clinical care. I’m also involved in QI research and scholarly pursuits—having authored for AAFP Journal, OFP Journal, 5 Minute Clinical Consult, and Essential Evidence Plus.
What excites me most as a faculty member is the opportunity to shape the future of family medicine by mentoring and learning alongside the next generation of doctors. It is not only humbling and rewarding aspect of my work, but it also keeps me curious and hopeful about where the profession is headed.
Outside of work, I enjoy reading non-fiction books, exploring video-documentaries, hiking outdoors, and working on various odd-end projects at home from time to time. I also am a fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have enjoyed exploring the theme of team-dynamics among the various characters and how their story arcs contribute to the whole.
